Vance and Caine objected to escalating the war with Iran, officials say
The account comes only from officials describing a Friday White House meeting, not from Vance or Caine themselves.
Vance and Caine's objections surface as CENTCOM's silence enters a third night1
Central Command's public-release archive has posted nothing since a 13th consecutive strike announcement on July 23, a gap now three nights long.1 The reason wasn't public until officials described a Friday White House meeting where Trump was weighing a larger strike.2 There, Vice President JD Vance and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine objected to escalating the war.2 Caine's specific concern was the toll on the US munitions stockpile.3 A Defense Department official told CNN on Saturday only that operations are "on a hold." Neither Vance nor Caine has confirmed the account on the record.2 Reuters, filing through the Jerusalem Post, independently confirmed no strikes and no air-raid sirens in Bahrain, Jordan or Kuwait overnight.4 Iran International reports the quiet coincides with active negotiation over Gulf shipping routes, one more account of why the strikes stopped, and none of them official.5 CENTCOM's own archive shows the silence. It does not show why.
Parent PLUS loans get a lifetime cap for the first time: $65,0006
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the reconciliation law Congress passed in July 2025, caps Parent PLUS borrowing at $20,000 a year and $65,000 over a dependent student's lifetime.6 Neither program had a cap like it before, and the law also terminates Grad PLUS loans outright for anyone borrowing for the first time this fall.6 Georgetown's and Harvard's financial-aid offices, reading the same law, place both changes effective July 1.78 The SAVE repayment plan is retired in favor of a new Repayment Assistance Plan tied to income.78 Graduate students who used Grad PLUS to cover costs beyond the federal loan limit now have nowhere left to borrow in the federal system.78 The $65,000 lifetime limit runs per dependent child, not per family.78 A parent borrowing for three children in college at once gets three separate $65,000 ceilings, one per child.78 CBS News reports the department has set no single date by which every school must finish implementing the change.9 A borrower's experience of the new limits still depends on when their financial-aid office got to it.9
The Education Department sets a new floor for reporting abuse by school staff10
The Education Department's July 10 Dear Colleague Letter told every school district it is watching for a pattern it says has gone uninvestigated for years: sexual abuse and harassment of students by adults in positions of authority.10 The department's own language is direct, calling it "a troubling and recurring pattern in schools across the Nation of credible reports of sexual abuse and harassment by adults in positions of authority going uninvestigated."10 Two weeks on, education-law firm McGuireWoods is advising districts that the letter functions as a new compliance floor, not a one-time warning: it creates reporting and investigation obligations enforceable the same way any other Title IX finding is.11
ICE arrests hit their fastest pace in the agency's 23-year history12
The Department of Homeland Security's own release archive is where ICE publicizes the raids and arrests behind this month's numbers, case by case, without ever adding them up.12 Independent tallies do the math the department does not. Enforcement is running at nearly 1,600 arrests a day this month, a pace ICE has not matched in its 23-year history. More than 356,000 people have been deported so far this fiscal year.13 Add every deportation since Trump took office in January 2025, and the Washington Times puts the running total near 600,000.14 TIME reports the administration set a goal of 2,000 arrests a day after missing an earlier 3,000-a-day target.15 ICE is now soliciting construction companies to build detention capacity in as many as 14 locations to hold the people that pace requires.15
