Fires drive tens of thousands from their homes around Spokane

The fire was the day's one crisis with no argument over whose account to believe.

Fires drive tens of thousands from their homes around Spokane1

Days after Washington declared a statewide emergency,1 three fires around Spokane — Old Trails, Autumn Lane and Fairview — were still burning at zero containment, having driven roughly 60,000 people from their homes.2 The damage count stayed preliminary and contested: Al Jazeera put area-wide losses at “at least 600” structures,2 while a Spokane County fire chief counted 640 in the Old Trails fire alone.3 Sen. Maria Cantwell told a Spokane briefing that the danger had not passed: “The next couple of days will be challenging.”2

Capital One asks a judge to end the Trump debanking suit for good4

Capital One asked Judge Roy Altman to dismiss the Trump Organization's debanking suit permanently, without the leave to refile he granted after tossing the first complaint.45 The bank says it closed the roughly 385 accounts in mid-2021 after a months-long anti-money-laundering review of suspicious transaction patterns, not as political retaliation.5 The plaintiffs' rebuttal — a section of the amended complaint titled “January 6, 2021: The Political Trigger” — was filed entirely redacted.6

Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust et al. v. Capital One, N.A. U.S. District Court, S.D. Fla. · No. 1:25-cv-215964
Stage
Motion to dismiss the amended complaint, before Judge Roy Altman
Question
Were about 385 accounts closed for money-laundering compliance or as political payback?
Stakes
Whether a bank can be sued for closing a former president's business accounts

Iran nears a Hormuz deal with Oman, not the White House7

US-Iran talks resume Monday, but Tehran says the real progress is a deal it is cutting with Oman, not Washington: a new Strait of Hormuz shipping route its foreign ministry calls nearly complete.7 Iran describes it as “neither the northern route nor the southern route,” a bilateral and sovereign arrangement rather than the US-brokered opening Trump cited when he called off a threatened strike.7 Trump now calls a broader deal “imminent” but has set no deadline.8

Congress

A stopgap to fund the government reaches the Senate, still short of a deal9

The House-passed stopgap to keep the government funded reached the Senate, where Majority Leader John Thune filed cloture to force a vote.9 The House had cleared it 220-205 last month, six Democrats crossing over, to push the shutdown deadline past the November midterms.10 The two chambers still disagree on how long the money should last, the House at Dec. 4 and the Senate at Dec. 11,1011 and the outcome of the Senate vote was not yet settled.9
