A federal judge clears sealed Epstein investigation records for release

Judge Loretta Preska held that Congress's 2025 transparency law overrides the sealing orders and privacy claims that had kept records from Virginia Giuffre's 2015 suit against Ghislaine Maxwell under seal.

Preska rejects Maxwell's bid to keep the Epstein records sealed1

U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled on Tuesday, 11 August, that sealed documents from the government's investigations of Jeffrey Epstein can be made public.1 The records were produced in Virginia Giuffre's 2015 civil suit against Ghislaine Maxwell and had been closed under earlier protective orders.2 Preska held that the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a 2025 federal disclosure law, takes precedence over those orders and over Maxwell's privacy claim.2 Maxwell had objected. Finding a compelling need to unseal, the judge wrote that withholding would leave "the public ... with an incomplete and potentially misleading picture of Maxwell and Epstein's criminal activities" and would "risk undermining the public trust Congress sought to promote."2

A second injunction blocks Trump's order tying mail ballots to voter lists3

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani granted a preliminary injunction on Tuesday barring the U.S. Postal Service from carrying out President Trump's executive order on mail voting.3 The order sought to condition mail-ballot delivery on new voter-list requirements the Postal Service would enforce.4 The League of Women Voters and other voting-rights groups won this second order against the directive. Unlike the earlier injunction, which reached only the Democratic-led states that had sued, this one applies nationwide.4 Talwani wrote that "the executive branch has no authority to regulate elections." Fewer than 90 days remain before the 3 November midterms.5

The July inflation reading is due as the Fed weighs a rate hike6

The Bureau of Labor Statistics was due to release the July Consumer Price Index on Wednesday morning; its most recent published figures are June's.6 In June, consumer prices fell 0.4 percent, the largest one-month drop since April 2020, and rose 3.5 percent over the prior 12 months.6 Core prices, setting aside food and energy, held flat on the month and were up 2.6 percent on the year.6 Economists expected only slight further easing in July.7 The Federal Reserve held its target rate at 3.50 to 3.75 percent on 29 July, and three of its members dissented in favor of a quarter-point increase. Futures markets put the odds of a September hike at roughly even.7

A former Marine held four years in Russia is back on U.S. soil8

Robert Gilman, a former Marine held in Russia for more than four years, has been released, the State Department said.8 He was back in the United States on Tuesday night and was expected to land at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington.9 President Trump announced the release on Truth Social, saying it involved no prisoner exchange and was made "very much on a Humanitarian Basis."9 Gilman was detained in 2022. A three-and-a-half-year sentence for assaulting a police officer was later extended to about 10 years after convictions for attacking prison staff.9 The State Department credited its special envoy, Steve Witkoff, thanked Russia for allowing Gilman to receive medical care in the United States, and said it continues to press for other detained Americans, naming Stephen Hubbard.8
