Supreme Court lets third-country removals resume

The emergency order leaves the removal policy in force while the Court considers its legality.

Word of the Day
palimpsest noun /ˈpæləmpˌsɛst/ (PAL-imp-sest)

A manuscript page reused after its earlier writing was erased or obscured; also, something bearing visible layers from its past.1

Greek palimpsēstos joined palin (“again”) to psēstos (“rubbed smooth”), a name for writing scraped away so a page could serve again.2 The British Library describes a tenth-century Syriac manuscript whose reused pages preserve two older Latin texts, including fragments of the historian Granius Licinianus.3

The Supreme Court lets third-country removals resume

On September 29, the Court stayed a lower-court order requiring advance notice and a chance to raise fear-of-persecution or torture claims before removal to a third country.456 It also granted the government’s petition for review.4 The emergency order keeps the policy operating during litigation. It does not decide legality on the merits.4 Reuters says human-rights groups count more than 25,000 removals to 29 countries. That is an advocacy tally, not a Court finding.56
