Alibaba ships Qwen3.8-Max without the weights or the proof

The 2.4-trillion-parameter release leads a quiet AI week whose firmest results were three peer-reviewed physics and immunology papers dated July 15 to 30.

Alibaba reports frontier-level scores for its 2.4-trillion-parameter Qwen3.8-Max1

Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max on August 3, its largest model to date. It carries 2.4 trillion parameters with 95 billion active per forward pass through a sparse mixture-of-experts, runs a one-million-token context, and lists at $2 and $6 per million input and output tokens.2 The company had previewed the model at WAIC on July 19 and held the numbers back until the August 3 release.3

Alibaba's reported scores for Qwen3.8-Max, run on mixed harnesses of its own choosing and not independently reproduced.4
Benchmark Score What it measures, and Alibaba's framing
Terminal-Bench 2.1 86.6 Agentic command-line work; Alibaba places it above Claude Fable 5 (84.6) and below GPT-5.6 Sol (88.8).
OSWorld-Verified 86.1 Computer-use tasks driven from screenshots.
PaperBench 93.0 Reproducing published machine-learning papers.

Every score is Alibaba's own, and none has been reproduced outside the company. The open weights that would let anyone check were still not on Hugging Face or ModelScope as of August 5, and no license had been named. Even the headline agentic demonstration stays out of reach. Alibaba says a company-run coding agent worked a codebase for about sixteen days across 265 commits, but there is no public model to rerun it.3

Immunology

Dietary arginine sets how much MHC-I a cell can build, a Rockefeller team finds in mice5

In a July 30 Cell paper, a Rockefeller University group led by Qiushuang Wu and Sohail Tavazoie traced antigen display back to the supply of a single amino acid.56 When arginine outside the cell runs low, the cell represses the transfer RNAs that carry arginine to the ribosome. Translation then stalls on the arginine-rich MHC-I message, and the amount of MHC-I reaching the cell surface falls.6

The effect is codon-specific. Rewriting the MHC-I gene with synonymous arginine codons abolishes it, which rules out a general slowdown in protein synthesis.7 Arginine-restricted mice fared worse against influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and grew more colon tumors; extra dietary arginine reversed both. The authors read the result as an argument for arginine intake as a possible adjunct to cancer immunotherapy, not a standalone treatment.8

Ultrafast Optics

An École Polytechnique team builds the first all-optical photonic time crystal and halves its light loss9

Reported in Nature on July 29, a collaboration led by Tingwen Guo at École Polytechnique, with Collège de France and Germany's HZDR, pushed a metamaterial into the photonic-time-crystal regime with light alone.910 A photonic time crystal is a material whose optical properties are switched in time rather than patterned in space, and until now the switching had been too slow to reach one all-optically.

The team modulated a gold surface-plasmon structure on an indium-antimonide layer with HZDR's terahertz source. That switched its reflectivity on picosecond timescales, roughly a thousand times faster than the electronic modulation these schemes had relied on.11 The switching cut the plasmonic loss inside the metamaterial by half, the number that has kept surface-plasmon devices impractical, and points toward terahertz lasers and optical computing.11

Quantum Networking

A cesium atom and a quantum dot interfere their photons for the first time12

Published July 15 in Light: Science & Applications, groups at Pusan National University and UNIST observed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between single photons from two physically unlike sources: a warm cesium vapor and an InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dot.1213 Coaxing indistinguishable photons from unlike emitters usually demands active spectral or temporal correction; here the two photons interfered without it.

The two-photon visibility was 0.65 ± 0.14 after correcting for detector resolution, with a spectral overlap of 0.88.13 Reaching that took cooling the quantum dot to about 12 kelvin, tuning its emission onto the cesium line near 917 nanometers.13 A modular quantum network will have to link different kinds of qubit, and this is the first direct interference between an atomic and a solid-state single-photon source.12
