An internal OpenAI model reports ten advances in math and theoretical computer science

The Lean 4 certificates confirm the formalized theorems compile, but whether each matches its informal claim is what no mathematician has publicly worked through.

OpenAI posts a 253-page manuscript and Lean certificates for ten new results1

OpenAI released a 253-page manuscript, "Ten Advances in Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science," attributing every result to "an internal OpenAI model" and framing the ten as advances rather than solved problems.1 Two resolve named questions: an explicit non-sofic group is constructed, answering whether every countable group is sofic, and Connes's rigidity conjecture is disproved. Others tighten an existing figure, such as the exact asymptotic strength of the Cohn-Elkies bound for high-dimensional sphere packing.1 Machine-checkable Lean 4 certificates accompany the work on GitHub, and compiling the repository confirms that the formalized theorems hold.2 That guarantee stops at the formal statement. Whether each Lean statement faithfully encodes the informal claim it stands for is a separate question, and no named mathematician is on record as having worked through those informal arguments. Full peer review is still to come.2

The EU AI Act's Article 50 transparency rules take effect without a finished marking standard3

The European Commission's Article 50 transparency obligations became applicable on 2 August 2026, thirteen days after the Commission issued the guidelines interpreting them.3 Providers of interactive systems must tell users they are dealing with an AI, deployers must label deepfakes, and generative systems must mark their outputs in a machine-readable format detectable as AI-generated.3 That marking duty is legally live while its technical standard is not finished: the Commission offers a voluntary Code of Practice as the interim path, and generative systems already on the market have until 2 December 2026.4 Non-compliance can reach EUR 15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher.4

California's narrower transparency law switches on the same day5

California's AI Transparency Act became operative the same day, a date AB 853 moved from the original 1 January 2026.5 It reaches a narrower set of companies than Article 50 but adds one duty the European rule omits: a free, public AI-detection tool.6

The two transparency regimes that became live on 2 August 2026, by who they bind and what they require.54
Regime Who it binds Core duty Live
EU AI Act, Article 50 all providers and deployers of in-scope systems disclose AI chatbots, label deepfakes, mark generative outputs as machine-readable and AI-detectable 2 Aug 2026
California AI Transparency Act generative providers over 1 000 000 monthly users, accessible in California run a free detection tool; apply visible and embedded content disclosures 2 Aug 2026

Tesla and SpaceX commit $16.8 billion to a Texas chip fab called Terafab7

Tesla and SpaceX committed $16.8 billion to a first-phase semiconductor fab in Grimes County, Texas, that SpaceX calls Terafab, with the state adding a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant toward 3,000 jobs.7 SpaceX describes a vertically integrated plant handling logic, memory, advanced packaging, and testing under one roof, its chips bound for Tesla's Optimus robots and Cybercabs and for SpaceX's space-based data centers.8 The figure is a first-phase commitment with civil work only starting, not a fab that runs, and later expansion phases would push the total investment much higher.9

SK hynix and Sandisk publish the first High Bandwidth Flash standard10

SK hynix and Sandisk published the first standard specification for High Bandwidth Flash, a NAND-based memory tier meant to sit between HBM and the SSD.10 The spec sets capacities up to 512GB a stack across three grades from 0.4 to 3.0 TB/s, with UCIe as the interconnect. It shipped through the Open Compute Project about six months after the consortium of SK hynix, Sandisk, Google, and Tenstorrent formed.10 It targets the memory-capacity ceiling that HBM's bandwidth cannot lift on its own.11
