Two labs ship vulnerability-finding models on opposite terms

OpenAI gates GPT-5.6-Cyber behind identity checks and legal attestations while Z.ai moves to publish GLM-5.3's weights for anyone to run.

OpenAI gates its vulnerability-finding model behind identity checks1

OpenAI released GPT-5.6-Cyber around August 10 or 11, a model built for vulnerability research, penetration testing, and incident response. The company put it behind a verification gate it calls Daybreak Red: identity checks, legal attestations, and an approved use before access.1 A second tier, Daybreak Blue, strips the usual refusals for vetted defenders. The Hacker News reads the launch as safeguards deliberately loosened for exploit development.2 On its own evaluation OpenAI reports the model completing 95.0% of advanced exploit-chain scenarios, against 57.3% for the earlier GPT-5.5-Cyber and 1.5% for the general-purpose GPT-5.6 Sol. No one outside the company has reproduced those figures.1 The one claim a reader can check independently is a single named find, CVE-2026-15903, a flaw in the V8 JavaScript engine rated CVSS 8.8. Its separate report of "over 400" privilege-escalation bugs in operating-system kernels names none of them.1

Z.ai answers with GLM-5.3 and promises open weights within two weeks3

Days later, Z.ai took the opposite path. GLM-5.3, announced August 14 under the slogan "Built to Code, Ready for Cyber Defense," is post-trained on the company's existing 743B GLM-5.2 base with no new pre-training run. Z.ai says it will publish the weights on Hugging Face under an open license within about two weeks.3 Where OpenAI decides who may run its model, Z.ai proposes to let anyone. The capability case is again the vendor's own. Z.ai reports its CyberGym score climbing from 77.2% to 84.5%, ahead of the 83.8% it attributes to Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5, though by SiliconANGLE's account it still trails Anthropic on two other cybersecurity tests.34 SiliconANGLE also relays Z.ai's claim of more than 2,400 vulnerabilities found across 269 projects, one in code written 40 years ago, with no independent audit of the count.4 The two accounts do not even agree on the model's size. Z.ai describes a 743B base, and SiliconANGLE reports 753B total parameters.34 Nathan Lambert, reading it from outside either company, judges that open Chinese labs stay within reach of the closed frontier on coding and cyber work.5

Meta releases Muse Glimmer, a 30B open-weights agentic model6

The same week's other open release came from Meta. On August 10 its Superintelligence Labs published Muse Glimmer, a 30B multimodal model under an Apache 2.0 license. The model is distilled from its larger Muse system and tuned for local agent work, coding, and use as an LLM judge.6 Quantized to 4-bit it runs under about 20 GB, inside a single consumer GPU.67 Unlike the week's two cyber models, Muse Glimmer is a general agent model with no offensive-security purpose, and under Apache 2.0 anyone may download and use it commercially today.6

Engineered gut bacteria sense glucose and improve control in mice and monkeys8

In synthetic biology, a Nature paper published August 12 describes an engineered probiotic that behaves like a glucose sensor.8 The bacteria carry a synthetic gene circuit, a HexR regulator wired to a synthetic promoter, that switches on and secretes therapeutic factors only when gut glucose crosses a threshold, then clears instead of colonizing permanently.8 In mice and in non-human primates, long-term oral dosing improved glycaemic control and lipid profiles and blunted diabetic complications, according to the paper's abstract.8 The work is preclinical with no human data, and the full paper sits behind Nature's paywall, so the effect sizes and how long the bacteria persist cannot yet be checked against it.8 Nature's news desk covers the result as a step toward a sense-and-respond "living drug" for blood sugar.9
