Westchester's Mexican anchor is Port Chester, but the best food-and-value pick is a New Rochelle birria counter

With a young kid along in July, the booking is Coyote Flaco's screened patio in Port Chester, and the seafood course is a Peruvian ceviche counter the county's Mexican kitchens don't supply.

Where Westchester keeps its Mexican tables

Port Chester holds the county's densest Mexican strip, and New Rochelle's Union Avenue its second. Westchester Magazine's dining desk names both towns as the county's Mexican hotspots1, and in 2018 the same magazine walked the strip restaurant by restaurant in a first-person taco crawl2. Two facts from the current record shaped tonight's picks. The sit-down room that 2018 coverage leaned on, Taco Shack, has closed; its Yelp listing now reads "CLOSED"3. And no genuine Mexican mariscos house, the kind that would plate coctel de camarón or pescado a la talla, turned up anywhere in the county with independent coverage. The season's ceviche table is Peruvian, and it is filed below as exactly that. Three Mexican rooms score here on food, ambiance, value, and whether a five-year-old is welcome at 6 p.m., and that Peruvian counter is scored beside them as the season's labeled seafood detour. Los Abuelos in Ossining is named but left unscored, its review record a decade stale.

The al pastor at La Picardia, and tacos at 3 a.m.

Order the al pastor. Westchester Magazine's 2018 crawl called it "the headliner," bits of achiote-stained pork studded with pineapple, and rated the shrimp and fish tacos "muy bueno"2. The kitchen has run since 2011 out of 118 Westchester Avenue, across from the Capitol Theatre, and bills its Baja-style fish tacos and carnitas burritos as the house specialties4. Tacos run $5.25 for steak, al pastor, birria, chicken, or carnitas, and $5.50 for fish or shrimp, with a per-person check around $20 to $30. Those figures come from a delivery-menu listing read through a search engine on 2026-07-19, because the restaurant's own site hides dish prices behind an ordering widget and the aggregator pages block direct fetching5. A listed $20.50 burrito sits far above the tacos and is almost certainly a large "super" build; the counter also pours aguas frescas, the fresh juice a five-year-old will actually drink4. The 2021 magazine roundup adds hearty pozole to the order1. What the room is not is quiet. The walls carry Jerry Garcia memorabilia, the ceiling a canopy of tissue-paper garlands, and the music, a critic reported, runs a little too loud2. The draw is late: the own-site hours run to 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and one regular calls it "the only place around that serves food after 2am"4. Yelp logs 228 reviews6.

Food 4/5

The 2018 crawl named the al pastor "the headliner" and the fish and shrimp tacos "muy bueno"2; the 2021 roundup adds pozole.1

Ambiance 3/5

Jerry Garcia memorabilia, tissue-paper garlands, and music a critic called too loud: festive, not restful.2

Value 5/5

Tacos at $5.25 and $5.50 and a $20–30 check, from a delivery-menu listing read via search5; one diner on the own site calls the prices "really reasonable."4

Kids 3/5

Cheap tacos and aguas frescas a five-year-old will drink, but the documented energy is late-night and bar-adjacent, "the only place around that serves food after 2am."4

Coyote Flaco keeps the only patio worth July

Coyote Flaco owns the one patio this list would book in July: a screened porch one diner describes as "inside-but-outside... with heaters, fun turf, and decor," plus outdoor picnic tables and, per another, "a pitcher of their jalapeño margaritas"7. The restaurant runs out of a converted house at 115 Midland Avenue, the family living upstairs, now under second-generation owner Christian Lopez, who took it on from his late father Luis7. The order the critics point to is the combination platter: grilled shell steak, or a pile of jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce, sharing the plate with a taco or enchilada1. One OpenTable diner singles out the Oaxaca mole and the fajitas that "stayed hot"8. Price is the one contested reading in the set. OpenTable bands the room at $31 to $50 a person8, while diners on the restaurant's own page call it "a tinny mom and pop... super humble"7. A humble house can still ring up on platters and margarita pitchers, so the value line below rests on the combos, not the booking-site band. Listings read on 2026-07-19 put it closed Mondays; confirm the rest at booking8. The picnic tables and the family-run house read easy for a kid at an early dinner7.

Food 4/5

Critics point to the combination platters, grilled shell steak or garlic jumbo shrimp beside a taco1, and an OpenTable diner praised the Oaxaca mole and fajitas.8

Ambiance 5/5

The screened porch with heaters and turf plus outdoor picnic tables is the only patio here built for a July dinner.7

Value 3/5

Contested: OpenTable bands it $31–50 a person8, while diners call it "super humble"; scored on the combination platters, not the booking-site band.7

Kids 4/5

A family-run converted house with picnic tables outside reads easy for an early dinner with a child.7

New Rochelle's birria beats the field

The birria is why New Rochelle earns the drive. In the 2018 crawl, the beef "almost melts into the taco, seeping pepper-and-clove-scented broth onto a double layer of corn tortillas," and the order arrives with a complimentary appetizer taco of refried beans and crisped chorizo the critic wished she could order on its own2. The owners hail from Jalisco, birria's home state2. Restaurant Tecalitlan sits at 123 Union Avenue on New Rochelle's Mexican row, open Sundays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and 10 to 9 the rest of the week, with a per-person check of $10 to $20, the lowest here9. It also carries the deepest diner record of the set: 4.6 out of 5 across 403 Google reviews9. The 2021 roundup notes California-style burritos packed with familiar and less-familiar fillings, tongue among them1. Two cautions. The room is small and intimate, "family owned and run," which is the charm and the constraint at a busy hour with a stroller9. And Restaurant Guru lists no outdoor seating, so the July-patio case does not apply; this is the indoor birria pick9.

Food 5/5

Birria that "almost melts into the taco" with pepper-and-clove broth and a free chorizo taco with the order2, behind a 4.6 across 403 Google reviews.9

Ambiance 3/5

An "intimate family owned and run" room, small enough to feel the crowd at a busy hour; no outdoor seating.9

Value 5/5

A $10–20 check, the lowest of the set, against the deepest rating record here.9

Kids 4/5

Family-run and casual, welcoming for a kid, though the small room fills.9

Where a Mexican mariscos house should be, a Peruvian ceviche counter

The ceviche is the reason to come, and the kitchen behind it is Peruvian, not Mexican. El Palacio de los Mariscos, at 134 North Main Street in Port Chester, runs its own menu to ceviche, leche de tigre, jalea, and lomo saltado, and bills the food on its homepage as "the typical Peruvian food"10. It is included as the season's ceviche detour, labeled plainly, because no Mexican mariscos house with independent coverage surfaced to fill the slot. Diners writing on Yelp and TripAdvisor call the ceviche "extremely fresh and properly marinated" and "some of the best on the East Coast," the fish cured in citrus rather than heat6. The same diners are blunt about the rest: "everything not seafood related is pretty bland... visit only if you're getting seafood"6. From the restaurant's own menu, read directly on 2026-07-19, a ceviche de pescado is $18 and the mixto $19. Leche de tigre is $15. A whole fried red snapper, pargo rojo, runs $25, and the family jalea for four is $5010. Restaurant Guru puts the room at $20 to $30 a person, open daily 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., rated 4.2 across 146 Google reviews, with diner atmosphere scores clustering around a basic 3 out of 511. There is no kid-specific record here. It is scored below as the Peruvian aside it is, not as a Mexican room.

Food 4/5

Ceviche diners rank among "the best on the East Coast," "properly marinated" in citrus; the same reviews warn the non-seafood dishes run bland.6

Ambiance 3/5

A basic seafood room; diner atmosphere scores cluster around 3 of 5.11

Value 3/5

$18–19 ceviches and a $50 family jalea for four, fair for the seafood if narrow beyond it.10

Kids 2/5

No kid-specific record; scored down for a basic room with nothing documented for children, not for anything observed against them.11

Which table to book this week

For the best food and the best value at once, Restaurant Tecalitlan's birria in New Rochelle carries the deepest record and the lowest check9. For a July dinner with a young kid, Coyote Flaco's screened patio and picnic tables are the only outdoor room here worth the season, combos for the table and a jalapeño-margarita pitcher for the adults7. La Picardia is the late, cheap, loud taqueria for al pastor after a show at the Cap2. And if the night wants raw fish, El Palacio's ceviche is the seafood course the county's Mexican kitchens don't serve, on the clear understanding that the kitchen is Peruvian10.

Per-person bands and diner ratings as read 2026-07-19: La Picardia $20–305, Coyote $31–508, Tecalitlan $10–20 and Google 4.69, El Palacio $20–30 and Google 4.211, Los Abuelos $10–2512.
Restaurant Town Per person Diner rating Outdoor
La Picardia Port Chester $20–30 Yelp: 228 reviews None confirmed
Coyote Flaco Port Chester $31–50 OpenTable 4.0 (3) Screened patio
Tecalitlan New Rochelle $10–20 Google 4.6 (403) None
El Palacio (Peruvian) Port Chester $20–30 Google 4.2 (146) Listed, unverified
Los Abuelos Ossining $10–25 Trip 4.1 (57) Listed
Thin record

Los Abuelos, on North Highland Avenue in Ossining, is the county rotation this issue can't score. Its listed diner reviews run 2013 to 2015 and no later, its ratings sit middling at Trip 4.1 across 57 and Zomato 3.9 across 16, and the 2021 magazine cites it only for sides, tortas and a raw-cactus salad, not as a destination121. The record is too thin to grade on food, ambiance, value, or kids without guessing, so it isn't graded.

For a Sunday in July with a five-year-old in tow, the booking is Coyote Flaco at 6 p.m., outside on the picnic tables before the room fills; for the birria, drive to New Rochelle on a weeknight when Tecalitlan's small room is quiet79.
