Unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone kills a third US service member
CENTCOM's ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iran pushes Brent crude past $90 on Strait of Hormuz fears.
Unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone kills a third US service member1
A third US service member was killed in action on 18 July in northern Iraq, during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. Central Command, which owns the count, announced the death on 19 July and said a second soldier suffered a minor wound.1 The same weekend, CENTCOM reported a ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iranian command centers, air-defense and coastal-surveillance sites, missile and drone launchers, and communications networks, struck at 10 p.m. ET on 19 July to blunt Iran's reach over commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.23 Remains recovered at the site of the 17 July Jordan attack, which killed two Americans and left one missing, were still being identified.1 News agencies put the cumulative US toll at 17, a running total the CENTCOM releases do not state.4
Brent crude tops $90 as the Iran war menaces the Strait of Hormuz5
Brent crude topped $90 a barrel on Monday 20 July, up about 2.5% to its highest since mid-June, after the ninth night of US strikes and the American deaths raised the risk of disruption to oil leaving the Gulf; WTI rose to about $84.56 The price carries weight because of the geography behind it. The Strait of Hormuz moved roughly 21 million barrels a day in 2022, the US Energy Information Administration estimates, close to a fifth of the petroleum liquids the world consumes and more than a quarter of all oil traded by sea.7 Little of that volume can reroute around the strait by pipeline, so a credible threat to close it moves the barrel before any barrel is lost.5
Taylor Farms recalls its iceberg lettuce as a cyclospora outbreak sickens more than 1,6448
Taylor Farms said on 17 July it would pull from the US market all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, after federal investigators traced a five-state outbreak of Cyclospora to a single supplier, Taylor Farms de Mexico.89 The FDA and CDC have tied more than 1,644 illnesses, 94 of them requiring hospitalization and none fatal, to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia, with symptom onset from 13 May to 13 July.810 The recall rests on that epidemiological traceback, not on a contaminated sample: a lettuce specimen that tested positive on 18 July was re-reviewed a day later and, the FDA says, should be treated as a false positive.8 The recalled lettuce reached roughly 28 states between 29 June and 16 July, a distribution footprint far wider than the five states where people fell ill.1011
Canadian wildfire smoke puts more than 100 million Americans under air alerts12
Smoke from roughly 900 wildfires burning across Canada, more than 200 of them out of control, together with fires in northern Minnesota, drove air from northeast Minnesota to southeast Virginia into the "very unhealthy" to "hazardous" bands over 17-19 July.1213 By media tallies of National Weather Service alerts, more than 100 million people across as many as 18 states and the District of Columbia sat under air-quality warnings at the peak, though no single agency count owns those totals and they shifted by the hour.12 The federal AirNow system, which pools readings from the EPA, NOAA, the Park Service, NASA and the CDC, is the record for the underlying air-quality index.14 By 18 July the Northeast was already clearing even as the Midwest stayed socked in, a severe but receding episode rather than a worsening one.13
DHS caps foreign-student visas at four years15
The Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule replacing the open-ended "duration of status" that has long governed foreign students with a fixed admission period capped at four years, published in the Federal Register on 17 July and effective 15 September.1516 Holders of F student and J exchange visas whose programs run longer will have to file an Extension of Stay with US Citizenship and Immigration Services, subject to biometrics and background checks; DHS, which titled the rule an end to "foreign student visa abuse," first proposed the change in 2025.15 University leaders counter that doctoral degrees and many research programs routinely exceed four years, and that routing hundreds of thousands of students through repeat extensions will strain both budgets and the students' own standing.1617
